The 2026 eclipse is over. Your Moon photos still look like a cookie.

A look back at totality, then the old Moon problem: focus on the disk, drop the exposure, and decide if you want craters or the landscape.

Yesterday the Moon slid in front of the Sun and, for a little while, a narrow strip of Earth went dark in the middle of the afternoon. The shadow ran through the Arctic, Greenland and Iceland, crossed the Atlantic, and arrived in northern Spain (and a sliver of Portugal) just as the Sun was getting low. Out near Iceland, totality lasted a little over two minutes. In Spain it was closer to a minute, with the kind of late light that makes the whole sky look slightly wrong.

People went out to ridges, beaches, rooftops, and those empty car parks that only fill up when something unusual is happening. Glasses on, then off for the brief bit of totality. A lot of phones went up too, which is fair. It is hard to stand under a black Sun and not try to keep a piece of it. The funny thing, and photographers have been saying this for decades, is that the picture almost never matches the minute you were actually there. The sky did something huge. The file is just a file.

So I would not start with the eclipse photos. Totality is over. The Moon, luckily, will be back tomorrow night, looking like a pale cookie in the camera roll, and the daytime sky will keep turning into a white rectangle the second the Sun walks into the frame. That is the useful leftover from all that looking up.

The Moon is brighter than it looks

If you have ever pointed a phone at the Moon and got a white blob, you are in good company. It happens to almost everyone the first time. The Moon looks gentle in the sky. It is not. It is a rock sitting in full sunlight, and the camera, seeing all that black around it, usually tries to brighten the whole scene. The disk blows out. The craters vanish. You go inside convinced the Moon is unphotographable.

It is not. You just have to stop treating it like a night photo.

When you take the picture, put the Moon in the middle of the frame and tap to focus on it. Get the focus on that bright disk, not on the trees or the rooftops. Then drop the exposure a lot. On a phone that usually means tapping the Moon and dragging the little sun icon down until the preview looks darker than what your eyes are seeing. That feels wrong. Do it anyway. Your eyes are better at this than the sensor is.

You have to pick one

Here is the part people fight with, and it is the same advice you would have found on photography forums ten years ago. You cannot really have both things in one honest frame, not at night.

If you want the craters, expose for the Moon. The hills, the water, the town, all of that will go dark. Sometimes it disappears completely. That is all right. You asked for a close look at a rock, and the landscape was never going to keep up.

If you want the place, expose for the place. The Moon becomes a bright, slightly blurry point. That is all right too. Nobody looking at the photo thinks it is a streetlamp. They understand: that glow is the Moon. You are showing where you were standing, not writing a report on lunar geology.

Pick before you shoot. Later, when you open an editor, you can tidy the file you actually made. You cannot invent crater rims that were never there, and you cannot politely bring a forest back after you crushed it to save those rims.

If you went for the craters

Even a well-exposed Moon shot often looks a bit flat. The disk is there, but it has no bite. This is where a few sliders help, and they are the opposite of what you do to a portrait.

Pull the highlights down, more than feels polite. The bright edge of the Moon is usually stealing the show. Add a little contrast so the surface stops looking like a sticker. Then darken the shadows. Yes, darker. The craters live in those small pockets of shade. If you lift the shadows, the way you might on a face, you get a grey balloon.

A full Moon is the worst offender, by the way. When the Sun is hitting it straight on, the surface goes flat and the texture hides. A Moon that is not quite full, with a bit of shadow along one side, is much kinder. The light rakes across the ground and the holes show up.

If you chose the landscape instead, leave the bright point alone. Trying to recover "detail" in that little glow just turns it into a sad smudge, and nobody is more convinced it is the Moon.

Skies do the same thing

A bright sky has the same habit. Clouds lose their edges. The Sun, or even a pale afternoon, turns into a hole in the picture. You do not need a special sky filter. You need less glow.

Drop the highlights until the clouds have a shape again. Add a little contrast if the blue still looks washed out. Leave the dark bits dark. A sky photo does not need every tree recovered. If the file is just a white hole, no slider will invent an exposure you did not take. But a lot of ordinary evenings are sitting one highlights pull away from looking like what you remember.

Then open Effects

  • Highlights down. For the Moon and for bright skies, be braver than you are with a portrait.
  • Contrast up a little, then stop when the edges feel crisp.
  • Shadows down if you wanted craters. Up only if a rooftop in a landscape shot fell into a hole you did not mean.

A touch of sharpness helps crater rims and cloud edges. Then stop. If it starts looking like a poster, you went too far.

The eclipse will not come back tonight. The Moon will. Decide in the moment: the rock, or the place with a glowing dot. After that, the sliders are just there to finish the job.
