Cropping is not only "make it smaller." Sometimes the good part of a vacation photo is the person in the corner, not the whole beach. Sometimes a whiteboard photo has one diagram that matters and a lot of clutter. Cutting that out makes a clearer picture.
Social apps make this worse. Your camera rarely shoots a perfect story frame. Upload a normal photo to Instagram Stories and the app cheerfully chops off whatever it feels like.
Crop a 9:16 story yourself
- Open Crop and upload the photo.
- Pick the 9:16 preset or type something like 1080 by 1920.
- Drag the frame until the subject sits comfortably inside, away from the top and bottom where the app UI lives.
- Download and post. Now the app has less room to ruin it.
Sizes worth knowing
A lot of feed posts are 1:1 or 4:5. Stories and reels want 9:16. YouTube thumbnails are wide, 16:9. You do not need to memorize every brand guideline. Knowing the shapes helps you shoot with a little room around the subject so you can crop later.
Keep faces and products out of the extreme corners. Stickers and captions eat those. Save the original as a master and export the crop under a new name.
