Profile photos usually show up as circles. That means the corners of your square upload disappear, and anything near the edge can get clipped. Before you set a new avatar on Instagram, Discord, or wherever, it helps to preview that crop.
Same idea for app-style icons. A flat square rarely matches the soft corners people expect.
Round it
- Open Rounded corners and upload a square image.
- Move the slider and watch the preview. Around 20% feels like a modern icon. Near 50% is basically a circle.
- Export PNG if you want transparent corners.
- For avatars, push high and check that nothing important sits in the trimmed corners.
Matching the look
Social avatars are circles, so max rounding shows what survives. iOS icons use a big continuous curve. Web cards are usually subtler, more like 4% to 12%. Oversized corners on a wide rectangle can look accidental fast.
If your photo is wide, crop to square first so the subject is centered the way the platform will show it. Then round the corners.
